The community pub that's won prestigious award and is 'an asset to Warwick’
A 16th-century Warwick pub is among the ones to receive a Recognition Award from Star Pubs. The Black Pug on Coten End was given the award for its contributions to the local community.
The Black Pug is owned by Matt and Alex Crowther, who have five pugs named pubs in Warwickshire. The pair from Leamington Spa took over in 2019 when it was formerly called The Millwright Arms and was rundown and used.
Since taking over, the pair invested £140,000 and worked to reverse its fortunes, transforming it into a family—and dog-friendly pub. To mark their new venture, they renamed the pub 'The Black Pug' after their pug dog Captain. The pub now employs a team of up to 40 people during the summer months, led by manager Alice Huxtable.
The Grade II-listed building became a pub in 1880 and has retained its charm and character from the old beams, snug, and log burner. It has been upgraded throughout with an outdoor bar and kitchen, a beer garden with six covered pergolas for all-weather use, and a private section for functions from birthday parties to christenings.
The pub is known for its pub classics such as traditional pies, sausages and mash, homemade burgers, Sunday roasts, and sourdough pizzas made from scratch, as well as coffee and cakes. Dishes are prepared fresh using ingredients from local suppliers, such as bread from WarwickStreet Kitchen and meat sourced from a Coventry butcher.
Dogs are also welcome. There is a water station in the garden, and they have their own menu, including a Paw Star Martini, doggy fish and chips, and Sunday lunches.
Matt said: "We’re honoured to receive this award. We couldn’t have done it without our fantastic team who go out of their way to make people feel at home, or the backing of residents. They have supported The Black Pug every step of the way and through all the challenges the pub industry has faced over the last five years. We’re very grateful."
